Flawless Makeup Starts With Great Skincare

Many of us simply think of our skin as a cosmetics canvas, but did you know that your skin is considered an organ? In fact, it’s actually the largest one we have. So, having flawless makeup is more than a matching foundation and a perfect lip color. Flawless makeup begins with great skincare.

Here are two easy things you can start doing today to get your skincare game up:

Make it a habit. Build a daily and regular skincare routine

The healthier your skin, the more effortless your makeup application will be. Every girl should have a daily skincare routine, it doesn’t have to be fancy, but it should at least consist of a cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen and exfoliant.

Exfoliate AND moisturize your lips

One of the most common complaints I receive from friends and clients is around their hate/love relationship with matte lipsticks because while it offers the desired high pigmentation it “dries” out their lips. The source of the issue may not lie in the lipstick. Remember your lips count as part of your daily skincare routine. You should exfoliate them at least 3 times a week, every day if needed.

Great skincare is a lifestyle choice. It doesn’t mean you will go through life without a blemish or wrinkle. It simply means you’re deliberately stacking the deck so the odds are in your favor…healthy skin will NEVER go out of style.

Cheers to Healthy Skin,

Traditional Lipsticks vs Liquid Lipsticks

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Liquid Lipsticks vs. Traditional Lipsticks

Liquid lipsticks have become more and more popular over the last few years, and due to their endless benefits, they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. It isn’t all roses though and there are still some aspects which make the traditional lipstick a favorable choice. Discover all of the ups and downs of liquid and traditional bullet lipsticks.

Why we love liquid lipsticks so much:

Highly pigmented

Liquid lipsticks have high pigmentation for an opaque look, meaning you can achieve the look you’re after in just one swipe. Alternatively, with a little bit of blotting, you can reduce the heaviness for a softer everyday look. If bold lips are your thing, you definitely need a liquid lipstick (or ten) in your collection.

No liner needed

Liquid lipsticks are perfect for creating precise and crisp lines, whereas traditional lipsticks need an additional lip-liner to achieve the same look. So if you’re after a well-defined lip shape and are tired of feathering lipsticks, a liquid lipstick might just be your best option.

They just don’t budge

Liquid lipsticks are known for their longevity. Once the product has set, it has set for the day. With some traditional lipsticks, you may have to touch up on an hourly basis, whereas once liquid lipsticks have dried down, they won’t smudge, transfer or fade. Say goodbye to lipstick-stained glasses and constant touch ups!

Where traditional lipsticks come out top:

Liquid lipsticks are hard to apply

Applying liquid lipstick is a skill which requires a steady hand, and if you haven’t mastered the art then you may suffer with wonky lines and uneven coverage. You’ll definitely need a mirror at hand and a few more minutes on the clock. It is also more hassle to touch up. You’ll need to remove all the product and start again which isn’t exactly ideal for on-the-go ladies.

Liquid lipsticks can be drying

Most liquid lipsticks dry to a matte finish and are designed to last for a long time. This means they can be incredibly drying, especially if you compare them to a creamy bullet lipstick. Easily avoid drying by never applying liquid lipstick to already dry lips. You’ll always have the perfect moisture if you apply lip balm before and after application.

Traditional lipsticks are easier to remove

If you’ve got a bold and bright lip on, then it’s always going to require a little more work to remove it, but with liquid lipsticks, the job can sometimes feel impossible. Don’t even attempt to wash it with water-based solutions. Always choose an oil formula to tackle it and wipe it right off.

There you have it, the good, the bad and the ugly of traditional and liquid lipsticks. Now that you’ve decided which is best for you, have a browse through our collection to find the perfect shade.

Meet Roshell: Q&A with Liquid Courage founder

Meet EntreprenHER Roshell Rinkins. Fresh from the Florida shores, Roshell now resides in Northern California, where she is a corporate superwoman in Silicon Valley and the fearless founder of cosmetics company, Liquid Courage Cosmetics–a black owned beauty brand. She is no stranger to the grind of wearing multiple hats while trying to sustain a successful business. In the ever-changing beauty industry, you have to stay 5 steps ahead just to get ahead. Roshell spills the tea on how she manages it all.

Mayvenn Hair Blog: You are a black female entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, working a 9 to 5, and you have your own cosmetics line. Where did the idea to launch your own brand come from?

Roshell: I worked for  Procter & Gamble for 8 years, and I remember reading a study that showed when most women [are wearing] lipstick, they feel more courageous, bold, and fearless. The name Liquid Courage was the immediate thing that stuck in my mind. If you think about the cosmetics companies that are around, and not to bash anybody, but where is the empowerment? I wanted a brand that before picking up or trying the product, you knew this was something made for you.  We all need encouragement, and Liquid Courage is a lifestyle brand for women who are wives, mothers, business owners, community builders, and kicking butt in their industry. I really wanted my brand to represent that.

When Passion Meets Courage: Meet Tevyka Heyward

Name: Tevyka Heyward (pronounced Ta-vee-ka) or Tee for short

Age: 32

Lip Color: Chocolate Kisses lip lacquer and a bit of pink and nude pencils to give her lips a bit of a pop.

We are pleased to highlight Tevyka Heyward as this weeks Woman of Courage. We first met T during last years Blogalicious conference and she’s been one of our most loyal Liquid Courage customers.

T says, “Courage is following the path set forth in one’s heart and mind, regardless of what obstacles may stand in your way.” The most courageous thing T did this year was pursue her passion for event planning by starting a certification program and training for her 1st Spartan Race which she completed on August 1.

T offers the following advice for others who are need in courage, “Don’t dwell on past negativities, use every experience as a tool for learning. Don’t be afraid to step outside the box and be different. It’s easier said than done but once you accept what you really want to get out of life, walking away from the norm is the most courageous thing you can do, for yourself and others.”

T has taken this motto literally over the past few years from her experiences in the military to her current education and employment goals. “I’m willing to walk away from something that doesn’t fit my needs or at least approach it on my own terms.”

Thanks for sharing your Courageous story T.

The Courage to love your Sister

Name: Sonia Jackson Myles
Title: President & CEO, The Sister Accord LLC
Age: 47
Lip Lacquer: Wearing Take Me Out by Liquid Courage Cosmetics at the top of the Grand Canyon.
I resolve to establish an agreement with ALL of my sisters, whether they are black, white, red, yellow or brown. Whether they are strong or weak, rich or poor, educated at Harvard or educated on 17th Street, working in the C-suite or cleaning it. Whether they are independent or leaning and depending, confident or lacking self-esteem, fighting back or being abused and misused. I will uphold this commitment to my sisters.

This is an excerpt from The Sister Accord written by COURAGEous beauty Sonia Myles. Liquid Courage Cosmetics is the beauty empowerment brand of  choice for women worldwide so we are super excited to highlight Sonia as an Everyday Woman of Courage and bring visibility to the powerful Sister Accord Movement.

Sonia says, “courage is being filled with fear and taking the “leap” anyway!  What is key in this statement is that in order to truly be courageous you must be scared out of your mind to address a situation or to move forward on an idea.  If you’re not afraid, then it doesn’t take courage to act. In my experience, having courage is a journey.  For me, it began when I conquered my fear of dogs.  Once I “faced my fear” of something that controlled my life for so many years, I became unstoppable!!!”

What was the most courageous thing you’ve done this year? Co-founding Rivers Media Group LLC with my business partner, C. Key.  We are two fearless ladies with BIG DREAMS and now have the ability to touch people all around the world with music and entertainment via mobile devices via our partnership with Urban Planet Mobile!  If someone would have told me 18 months ago when I was an executive at Procter & Gamble that I would be living this amazing dream, I would have thought they were crazy!  I am pursuing my goals and passions with great tenacity & a sense of urgency.  It FEELS GREAT!!!!

For anyone in need of courage, Sonia offers the following advice. “Get centered, get focused and determine what God’s purpose is for your life.  I have come to understand that when I am operating in his God’s will, everything comes together when and how it is supposed to.  When I step outside of his will, chaos ensues!”

Live Courageously! Live Fearlessly!

Everyday Woman of Courage Barika and her Take Me Out experience

Name: Barika Williams

Age: The fabulous 33

Occupation: Municipal Government/Program Manager

Lip Lacquer: Take Me Out

Instagram: Cutieb74

Liquid Courage Cosmetics recently sat down with Barika Wllliams to hear her courageous story. Barika became a Liquid Courage customer on January 3, 2014 with her purchase of the Take Me Out lip lacquer.

When asked how she defines courage, Barika says, “as the ability to say “no” with a smile.”

What has been the most courageous thing you’ve done this year? The ability to grow despite the situation. As I beautifully mature in life, I learned to let go and let God handle all of my setbacks. Besides, a smile is worth a thousand words.

What advice would you give another woman who is need of courage to deal with a difficult situation? Be your own voice and find other champions that will support you to overcome your challenge. Always, keep a strong village of like minded friend’s to ensure you have a consistent and positive mental mindset. Remember, trouble doesn’t last always! Be encouraged, as pressure produces diamonds.
